Over at Crooked Timber, a post from John Quiggin regarding niggling inefficiencies in the US and other systems. This sparked comment regarding the English left-hand road network and early worries that traffic crossing the proposed Chunnel would collide in the middle. This led to this comment gem:

There was a letter in the Times in the early 1970s, suggesting that France-bound traffic should drive on the right, while Britain-bound traffic should drive on the left.

Can that be true? Or is it an urban letter-to-the-editor myth? Oh I hope it’s true.
