I’m flying this afternoon. And I’m not checking baggage. So all my toiletries have to go in a baggie. More frustratingly, the Michigan Football special edition bottle of Jim Beam I was taking as a visiting gift just flat out can’t come. I considered making myself a freedom baggie to offer my small resistance against the security theatre being perpetrated by the hapless TSA, but as an international student on an F1 visa the last thing I need to be doing is flagging my file in the SEVIS system.

Kip Hawley is an idiot, mind you. The liquids ban, now in it’s X month, was rubbish in day one. The fact that they have tacitly admitted as much by allowing people to take a baggie full of random open vials, but won’t drop the appearance of a ban, is proof of something. Proof that they either are a) too dumb to notice the futility of having a ban that isn’t a ban or b) know that the ban is factually pointless but realize that the job of the TSA isn’t to provide security (they could but hardly do) but rather to provide the in-your-face appearance of security.

Thus justifying their jobs and maintaining trust in our “strong on security” national government. Thus making us all less safe by making us feel like we don’t have to worry about real security threats. And whether you’re dumb or not, if that’s the way you run your agency, you are an idiot.
