Galatic Monkey Cafe and Hanuman Climbing Temple Bouldering Gym Rocks My Ass
The cafe/bouldering gym they’ve been building since before I moved to Squamish has been open for a week and I finally got a chance to drop in. It’s great. Apart from a pretty decent little bouldering wall which will no doubt improve as people evolve the routes, and a nice space for sitting and drinking coffee and eating baked goods, there is lots of space for hanging out and playing around. There is also lots of relaxed people who all seem to “work there” in some sense or another. And there’s a nice big dj booth. And a bin of free climbing shoes, so you can stop in during the working day.
Tonight they’re planning a post-climbing-movie-at-the-brew-pub late night climbing jam and jam session. Nice. Don’t suppose I’ll be up for rolling into there solo at midnight, but I fully approve of the concept. In the future there is to be regular open mic’s.
All in all pretty good. Hopefully this will work out as a catalyst for bringing together some of the alternative/rec people who hang out on the fringes of the town. The scene seemed a little on the young side, and a little on the hard-core rock-obsessed climbing bum side, but, well, what do you expect from a climbing gym/cafe in Squamish? Damn good stuff.
