Local

Today I got a haircut. I think hair dressers are the new bartenders. They have to listen to all your blathering self-pity. I guess on the plus side, they aren’t required to make eye contact while they do it. So today while my hair got shorter I pitied my self out loud for having to leave Victoria and the west to go live in Michigan, which as far as I know is flat and has winters that are much like the ones I grew up with, but with even more slush.

My haircutter is actually a pretty cool guy. He has developed a side-line helping cancer survivors choose and adapt their hair prostheses. What’s the plural of hair prothesis? And he cuts hair good. As far as I can tell.

Anyhow, this evening I was looking at this pretty cool comic strip that uses photography as a sort of collage medium and which is called a softer world. Looking at this strip in particular I thought, isn’t it funny how movie theatre marquees in North American cities all give the same feeling to a street scene. Then I thought, wait a minute, that is the Odeon on the corner of Blanshard and Yates in Victoria. Where I used to live basically. And yes, it turns out the creators of the comic are indeed Victoria-ites.

So here I am, local enough to spot out a random intersection in a soft-focus comic strip as belonging to my home town, and I’m leaving. Why do I do this? I like being local.

Here’s a picture I took of the same place a while ago:
