Do i have to go to the police station?

“i hadnt seen my friend since the night before it happened and we were both asleep on the day it occured, his grandma and grandpa both saw him sleeping during the day and my mom saw me, the cops want me to come in for an interview, but cant i just do it over the phone since im not under arrest for anything?

Can anybody help this guy make a decision? He doesn’t have enough gas money to get to the police station.
