To Tulsa and Back

I generally listen to a pretty broad selection of tunes. This year I got a hold of a nearly complete discography of J.J. Cale. I still listen to a broad selection of music, but man have I been listening to a lot of J.J. Cale. It’s a broad discography. I’ve come to 2 realizations.

1. Some of my earlier awe regarding Cale was due to unfamiliarity with his musical style. He got some free points just for playing the Tulsa sound and 70s-style bluesy rock generally, which I wasn’t aware was so damn cool. Having listened a lot, it’s true that he has limitations and some cheesy lyrics and gimmicky tracks.

2. Naturally is still a great album, but my new favourite, or at least my favourite for the time being, may well be To Tulsa and Back. Or maybe Troubadour. Damn.

I wonder if he’s touring. That would be cool.
